This story documents five days of certified scuba diving across Zakynthos’ western and southern coasts — logged with Suunto EON Steel computers, using Aqualung Legend LX regulators and Mares Rover BCDs, and guided by three locally licensed operators: Ionian Divers (based in Tsilivi), Blue Dolphin Diving Centre (Laganas), and Zante Divers (Argassi). We recorded 17 dives across eight sites, observed 43 marine species, and participated in two citizen-science coral health surveys coordinated by the Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation.

The Geology Beneath the Surface

Zakynthos sits atop the Hellenic Arc subduction zone, where the African Plate slides beneath the Eurasian Plate. Equipment Realities & Environmental Ethics

Below, it’s more precise: Zakynthos is where geology meets biology, where history rests on rock, and where every exhale bubbles upward through layers of time, memory, and resilience. No dive logbook captures that fully. But ours came close — 422 minutes, 17 dives, 43 species, and one unwavering commitment: to leave only bubbles, take only memories, and protect what remains.
