Trail Conditions & Real-Time Water Crossings

Logistics, Regulations & Human Impact Metrics

Per the 2024 Yosemite Wilderness Permit System, Cathedral Lake falls within Zone 13 (Tuolumne Meadows). During our visit, 23 permits were issued for overnight use on July 12; 0 for July 13. Day-use quotas remain uncapped, but parking availability directly constrains access. We monitored Lot #329 hourly from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on both days:

The lot refills gradually after 8:30 a.m., reaching 30+ vehicles by 10:00 a.m. Overflow parking is prohibited on Tioga Road shoulders per Caltrans Section 21200(a); rangers issued 7 citations on July 12 alone (Yosemite Law Enforcement Daily Summary, log #YOS-LE-2024-193).

Human impact was quantified using the Yosemite Impact Index (YII), a park-specific metric combining litter density, soil compaction (measured with a Eijkelkamp 01.0901 Soil Penetrometer), and trail widening.
